I would think the answer to this particular enigma is fairly incontrovertible. You find the “truth” by going “out there” and finding it for yourself; instead of relying on your “trust” in others to tell you their misinterpretation of it.
That is no doubt the reason Mulder and Scully spent the better part of nine seasons on The X-Files crossing the globe – although mostly British Columbia – running into aliens, monsters and way too many serial killers.
Without question. Unfortunately as social animals we're also beholden to gather that information from others. They certainly ran into their fair share of associations along the way. Monsters and aliens too of course.
Learning for yourself is indeed the key. Relying on untrusted others and particularly the government is a bad idea. It's particularly fitting today.
