SciFi Quotes III

"We're all just kids lying on our backs on a lawn looking up at the sky wondering where we fit in.
We seek answers to discover who we are.
And if our search takes us to unfamiliar or frightening places we trust that nature will help us find a way out."
-Maddux Donner, Defying Gravity, Ep9, Eve At The Apple-

"There is no control.
No constant.
No shelter but the love of family and the body God gave us.
And we can only hope that that will always be enough."
-Sarah Connor, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, S1, Ep2, Gnothi Seauton-

"It could have been worse."
-Jim Holden-
"It could always be worse."
-Amos Burton, The Expanse, S1, Ep2, The Big Empty-

"...Only we're not a go.
Because they still have acid fog and we only have two tone generators."
-Clarke Griffin speaking all kinds of crazy shit in The 100, S2, Ep12, Rubicon-

"How often do you touch your face?
Every three minutes.
You have mouth hand contact every five minutes.
You touch somebody else every twenty minutes.
That's how contagion works.
You don't like terrorists.
Try negotiating with a virus.
A virus exists only to find a carrier and reproduce.
That's all it does and it does it quickly.
It has no political views.
It has no religious beliefs.
It has no cultural hangups.
It has no respect for a badge.
It has no concept of time or geography.
It might as well be the middle ages. ... That's how a plague begins."
-The extremely underrated The Strain, S1, Ep1, Night Zero-

"Without the past there would be nothing to think about let alone someone to think it."
-Sense8, S1, Ep4, What's Going On?-

"Wait a minute.
You're actually saying that you need someone dumber than you are."
-Daniel Jackson (to Thor of the Asgard race)-
"You may have come to the right place."
-Jack O'Neil-
"I could go, sir."
-Samantha Carter-
"I dunno, Carter. You may not be dumb enough."
-Jack O'Neil-

"When you're young you get all worked up about what people think of you, but that's the good thing about getting older.
You realize, fuck that! It's what you think of yourself."
-Ray Drecker, Hung, S3, Ep7, What's Going On Downstairs Or Don't Eat Prince Eric-

"Come with me if you want to live."
-Pilar McCawley, played by Linda Hamilton (Sarah Connor), Defiance, S3, Ep3, Broken Bough- (No I'm not kidding)

"You should move to a small town where the rule of law still exists.
You will not survive here.
You're not a wolf and this is the land of wolves now."
-Sicario-

"That's what I do. I drink and I know things."
-Tyrion Lannister, Game Of Thrones, Season Six, Episode 2, Home-

Naveen Andrews: On Sense8 Versus Lost

"At the risk of offending Damon [Lindelof, LOST's producer] or anyone of those fuckers, it has a lot more depth.
It's far more daring! We can get away with so much more on fucking Netflix than you ever could with Disney."

-Naveen Andrews, SciFi Now #107 (p.54) on the apparent excellence of Netflix and Sense8 and not so excellent LOST-

Tell us how you really feel Naveen.

Andrews' comments were no doubt honest and uncensored. Those remarks surprised and caught this writer off guard when reading them. Am I wrong to sense a little hostility toward the creators of LOST?

To be fair, in retrospect, LOST pushed the envelope and to do so on ABC was nothing short of remarkable really. The creators were given significant rope.

LOST was dramatically engaging and original even with its shortcomings and despite being contrasted with the likes of TV output today via NETFLIX or HBO, LOST set the stage and took plenty of risks.

It may not be as risqué or as compelling as some of the greatest television making the airwaves today but LOST without question had its moments of greatness. It remains head and shoulders better than most and arguably should be considered one of the television greats as an original and imaginative narrative despite its then broadcast limitations.

Andrews' remarks seem harsh and of course there is no real context for them for me.

By the way Naveen, I've seen Sense8 and I'll take my chances with LOST. Having said that those involved with both LOST (Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof) and Sense8 (The Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski) hardly fall short of creative ambition or risk.

Wouldn't that be fair to say Naveen?

Richard Hatch (1945-2017)

"I fell in love with the original show and I spent a lot of time and money fighting to bring it back, so it was a painful process for me to accept that the studio was going ahead with a re-imagining instead.
I would have loved Universal to have made a continuation with Ron Moore and David Eick and most of their cast and crew.
But I had to come to terms in a very painful way that I didn't own Battlestar, and I had to move past my own frustrations to appreciate the new show on its own merits.
The new show is very different from the original Battlestar Galactica and they shouldn't really be compared.
It explores a similar premise in a very different way."

-Richard Hatch, Battlestar Galactica: The Official Companion-

The loss of Richard Hatch (1945-2017) was not lost on me when his passing came in February of this year.

Was there any actor more synonymous with Battlestar Galactica? Was there any actor more connected to the franchise than Richard Hatch? Hatch was like the living symbol of Battlestar Galactica (1978-1979). Along with that of Dirk Benedict's Starbuck, his was the face of the original series and an icon of the franchise itself.

Hatch also played a big part in the enduring legacy of the series through writing, books and comic books. It was Hatch who also shined a light on the arrival of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica (2003-2009) as envisioned by Ronald D. Moore. He was so important to the franchise he would land the role of Tom Zarek in Moore's series.

Often we lose actors that have the good fortune of gracing countless films and television appearances and these actors are hard to forget.

The sincere portrait of Captain Apollo embodied by Richard Hatch may be one of his crowning moments in television, but it was epic and it remains as unforgettable as he does. Apollo was the honorable colonial warrior and as a man Hatch appeared to mirror his life in much the same way.

Alongside Bill Paxton (1955-2017) and singer/songwriter George Michael (1963-2016) the loss of Hatch was yet another unexpected loss. Not to sound overdramatic, but losing influences like this is like someone ripping chapters of your life away. It's sad to see them go.

Included are images taken from a thorough analysis of Saga Of A Star World and more Battlestar Galactica classic found here.

Sci-Fi Quotes II

"The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long."
-Dr. Eldon Tyrell, Blade Runner-

"We're defined by our past.

We can rethink our choices a million times, but what we decide we own.
It becomes a part of who we are."
-Maddux Donner, Defying Gravity, Episode 5, Rubicon-

"Fear is not real. The only place fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future.
It is a product of our imagination causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist.
That is near insanity.... Danger is very real, but fear is a choice.
We are all telling ourselves a story."
-Cypher Raige, After Earth-

"Do you know how hard it is to fake your own death?
Only one man has pulled it off: Elvis."
-Fox Mulder, The X-Files, S1, Ep5, Shadows-

"I'm going to take some fresh air.
I guess it means a walk in the corridor."
-Anton Zoref, Space:1999, Y1, Ep9, Force Of Life-

"We're just caught up in The Churn is all.
When the rules of the game change.
Survival. ... we end up dead.
It doesn't really mean anything.
Or we happen to live through it, and well, that doesn't mean anything either."
-Amos Burton, The Expanse, Episode 7, Windmills-

"People break down into two groups when they experience something lucky.
Group number one sees it as more than luck, more than coincidence.
They see it as a sign, evidence, that there is someone up there, watching out for them. Group number two sees it as just pure luck.
A happy turn of chance.
I'm sure the people in group number two are looking at those fourteen lights in a very suspicious way.
For them, this situation is a fifty-fifty.
Could be bad, could be good.
But deep down, they feel that whatever happens, they're on their own.
And that... fills them with fear.
Yeah, there are those people.
But there's a whole lot of people in the group number one.
When they see those fourteen lights, they're looking at a miracle.
And deep down, they feel that, whatever's going to happen, there'll be someone there to help them.
And that fills them with hope.
See, what you have to ask yourself is what kind of person are you?
Are you the kind that sees signs, sees miracles?
Or do you believe that people just get lucky?"
-Reverend Graham Hess, Signs-

"I think children have an instinctive need for adults.

They want to be told right and wrong."
-Captain James T. Kirk, Star Trek: TOS, Miri-

"We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty."
-Mal, Firefly, Ep1, Pilot-

"Don't make me angry.
You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."
-David Banner, The Incredible Hulk-

"There are countless ingredients that make up the human body and mind, like all the components that make up me as an individual with my own personality.
Sure I have a face and voice to distinguish myself from others, but my thoughts and memories are unique only to me, .... I collect information to use in my own way.
All of that blends to create a mixture that forms me and gives rise to my conscience."
-Major Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost In The Shell-

"Humans have an innate tendency to anthropomorphize.
Might I remind you, you are a machine."
-Android Program, Dark Matter-

"A machine with friends."
-Android, Dark Matter-

"The freedom to make my own mistakes is all I ever wanted."
-Mance Rader, Game Of Thrones, Season Five, The Wars To Come-

"This is Doctor Rodney McKay speaking to you from my base of operations in the lost city of Atlantis, located deep within the Pegasus galaxy.
I record this message on the eve of our darkest hour.
As I speak, an alien armada of biblical proportions is on its way, bent - dare I say hellbent, in keeping with the metaphor – on our destruction.
We will do our best to stave off their attack but I am afraid that defeat is all but inevitable.
I, and the other members of my team, face the most horrific deaths imaginable, as our very lives are sucked from our chests in a, in a, horrific - Okay, uh, start again."
-Rodney McKay, Stargate Atlantis, S1, Ep17, Letters From Pegasus-

"Good morning!
And in case I don't see you, good afternoon, good evening and good night!"
-Truman Burbank, The Truman Show-

"It is far from easy to be a good man.
In fact, as one gets older, it becomes more and more difficult to know... what a good man is.
Yet it also becomes increasingly important to at least try."
-Rudolph Wegener, The Man In The High Castle, S1, Ep10, A Way Out-

"You know Salisbury steak is technically a hamburger...in the shape of a steak." -Paige Jennings, The Americans, Season Two-

"When people don't tell the truth it always ends badly."
-Chrisjen Avasarala, The Expanse, S1, Dulcinea-
