They are cookie-cutter formula films for the masses. It looks like he reached his zenith with 2012 which seems to be his ultimate disaster film but all the reviews I've read make it sound like its pretty awful.

Heh, that's funny how we ended up joining each other's blogs. Great timing, indeed.

Thanks for the words of encouragement re: my Michael Mann book. When I can find the time I have been working on it piecemeal. I hope to have it completed soon.

Oh, btw. I really enjoyed your FIREFLY posts. Love the show and esp. the film! The cast, the writing, direction, etc. was amazing and I am still bitter that it was canceled/cut down before it got a chance to really get going.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1031498593064294214.post-51111433114677094912010-04-28T15:06:49.525-04:002010-04-28T15:06:49.525-04:00I have to laugh. I wasn't a big fan of Independence Day or Godzilla. They just lack a certain soul or something. I'm not sure what it is. Too loud. Too sterilized. I'm not sure.

I'm with you completely on Sean Bean. I really like the actor and you can't fault a guy for that move for the reasons you detailed. You can't get them all right.

Pleasure to have your input. You've sold me on Radiator Heaven. Ewe Boll with more money. As for Michael Bay... ah, don't even get me started on that guy. His TRANSFORMERS movies are horrible and I'm glad I can go back to the animated movie when I want to get my fix.

I dig Sean Bean and I can see why he probably agreed to do THE HITCHER. That character is so iconic and it is probably a blast to play someone so malevolently evil but maybe he shoulda took a look at the script. But as you say, it's a paycheck gig and he needs to eat, too so I can't begrudge him.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1031498593064294214.post-72630890446695173982010-04-28T12:08:55.212-04:002010-04-28T12:08:55.212-04:00Boy J.D.- I couldn't agree with you more. In fact, given your recent review of The Hitcher and your reference to Michael Bay's remake of The Hitcher I made a connection here.

Roland Emmerich and Michael Bay may be the two biggest blockbuster styled hitmakers in Hollywood, but save for The Island and Stargate, both have served up utter shlock. Simply garbage. Like the clasic Hitcher, and Godzilla [or more importantly Gojira] these are the films to see and appreciate.

By the way, no disrespect to Sean Bean, he's a fine actor, as you mentioned, but he's working with Michael Bay. It's a money move. What can you do?SFFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04256589316922398158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1031498593064294214.post-60911742760562600072010-04-28T10:04:51.898-04:002010-04-28T10:04:51.898-04:00Wow, what a detailed, fantastic analysis of this c...Wow, what a detailed, fantastic analysis of this classic monster movie! I love this film and really enjoyed the special edition that came out a few years ago. It really doesn't get better than this and I hated the Roland Emmerich version that suckered so many of us in with those intriguing teaser trailers only to serve up a crappy, badly written, acted and directed movie! Watching the original serves as potent reminder of just how good it is and how it has stood the test of time.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.com
