I do understand it's kid oriented but had to have them thanks to my love for all things Sarah Jane/ Elisabeth Sladen.

Jones was a positive bore. I wasn't enjoying her input at all.

Tennant is as good as his companion it seems.

And yeah, I agree with your general assessment of Tennant though Eccleston did a bit of the RUN routine too, but he was just a stronger actor in the role of the Doctor for sure.

And, I must say that I found your last comment interesting. That may be true at times.

In fact, watching these older classics I sometimes wish there was even more meat for Tom Baker to chew on beyond the other portions of the stories that cushion these serials.

I WANT MORE BAKER! : ) He's so good when he has some material to work with.SFFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04256589316922398158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1031498593064294214.post-70587297772011216272014-08-31T12:26:22.344-04:002014-08-31T12:26:22.344-04:00Yeah, I meant to say the Sarah Jane Smith eps. was...Yeah, I meant to say the Sarah Jane Smith eps. was from her own show, The Sarah Jane Smith Adventures. It's a bit more oriented towards the kiddie, but really not much different from the newer rebooted Dr. Who programs. It's a bit too over the top and bombastic for my taste, depending upon my tolerance at the time.

I agree Martha and her adventures were a bit boring, and I agree about Tennant being charming, handsome, etc., but I don't think he has much range in the show either.

As I mentioned before, he's either happy and whimsical or grimacing and shouting, run and yelling. But that just might be what the stories call for or the way he was directed.

I do think the newer Who plays too much to the fandom aspects of it: hey, lets roll out the Daleks, hey lets roll out the sonic screwdriver, etc. a bit too often, so that the actual stories take a backdrop or at least that's the way it seems. Watching,...Ha. You are speaking directly to me EV.

Watching, writing and taking time out is all about mood for me as well.

If I'm not feeling it so endeth the run.

But at the moment I am alternating between classic and new Doctor Who and having a lot of fun with it. When that enjoyment wanes I will move on to anime or something else, but the classics are fun for a lot reasons as much as I enjoy the new ones.

Honestly there is alot to be said about these classics and the time they spend on an actor rather than the special effects. I'll say that much.

Case in point, and I will use this comment as an opportunity to write about it.

I just finished Series 3 of Tennant's run with Martha Jones and the special effects extravaganza that was the three episode arc centering on The Master was more silly than sinister. All those special effects and wacky story lines just felt a bit much.

And I wanted to like Martha Jones as a character but she was, to be terribly honest, pretty boring. No wonder the Doctor wasn't interested.

I get that she allegedly felt for him and liked him, but he had nothing going for her, and thank God because there was very little chemistry happening there. Series 3 apart from a few entries was generally the weakest yet, but I still enjoyed it most of the time.

I'm just thrilled Martha Jones was a one season companion unlike Rose and Sarah Jane.

Anyway, just some brief reflections on Tennant's run. He definitely is a charmer, handsome, but falls well below Tom Baker and Chris Eccleston in terms of performance. He's just not as interesting.SFFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04256589316922398158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1031498593064294214.post-9262445518537059882014-08-29T13:21:07.997-04:002014-08-29T13:21:07.997-04:00Like you, I've been going thru some of the cla...Like you, I've been going thru some of the classic Dr. Who partly because I've just been in the mood, and perhaps the other part, due to the recent Capaldi season gearing up & I won't be able to watch them for a while. But that's ok for me, as the older eps. appeal to me more, and I haven't seen them all and forget bits of some of the ones I have seen, plus a lot of the DVDs now have new special features on them I haven't seen, so it's a win win.

Last night I watched one of the Sarah Jane Smith eps. It's was one from the 4th season, called Death of the Doctor. It was fun because Jo Grant (Katy Manning) shows up as well as Matt Smith. I've warmed up to Matt Smith playing the doctor. He kind of has a Jules Verne, absentminded professor, steam punk appeal to him, though some of the stories he is in, don't appeal to me. Though there are some that are pretty good like The Snowmen etc. El Voxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05985563041511492981noreply@blogger.com
